We went to a conference a couple of weeks ago. One of the speakers talked about how vendors need to surprise people in some way as they pass by their booth. A great concept in theory, but how do you do it? Other than shouting BOO as they walk by. Oh wait, that’s not the kind of surprising they mean? Shoot. We spend a lot of time thinking about how to present ourselves at conferences - it’s easy to fall into the trap of being just like everyone else.
Another element of the conference was about using technology in your marketing. If you’re marketing to youth, you have to use technology the same way that they do. That’s one of the reasons I’ve signed up for facebook - that’s where they are, that’s where we have to be.
So keeping all that in mind, we’re launching www.literaryringtones.com. You go there, and (for now) you can download a number of Shakespeare Ring tones for your phone. Have you always wanted ‘to be or not to be’ as your ring tone? We’re also going to have Theatrefolk quotes on there as well. Sounds crazy. We’ll see if it works. But it would certainly be surprising to go to a publishing table and get a postcard for a ring tone…

I’m reading the latest ‘Teaching Theatre’ which is mostly about censorship. Scary things are happening these days; administrations tell teachers what plays they can and cannot do based on some bizarro notion that if you hide the bad things from students well then clearly it won’t happen to them.
Except in Miami-Dade county. Administrators are not allowed to censor play choice. There’s the general rules of course, the common sense rules when dealing with schools, you’re not going to have teens parading around nude for the sake of art. But administrators, especially prinicpals are not allowed to step in to stop a show.
What do you know. There is a place where the concept of free speech has some weight.

Spent last night with my composer Kristin Gauthier, listening to some of the songs for our new musical SHOUT which is coming out next year. It’s a very exciting process and very promising. I was listening to musicals before I could talk (I believe the first song I could sing all the way through was HAPPINESS from “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown) and it’s always been my dream to write one.
We’re looking for schools, or choirs, or students who just love musical theatre, to try out some of the songs this fall. Interested in getting a sneak peak? You just have to have a way to tape it and get it back to me. Give me a shout.
