Amazing Alvin

I just wanted to give a huge shout out to Alvin Collantes. He got together with a group of students and put on an evening of three plays this week. All three plays were quite strong - it’s was one of the most enjoyable evenings I’ve had in a while.

Alvin directed ‘The Bright Blue Mailbox Suicide Note‘ earlier this year for the Sears Festival and contacted me this summer looking for another play. He chose the short play ‘Walls.’ I think he’s a talented director and did a great job. ‘Walls’ is about a dysfunctional family: Alvin chose to open and close the play by having the family inside a huge family portrait. A great theatrical choice.

The other two plays were wonderful as well. ‘The Sure Thing’ which I’ve read many many times but never seen, and then a student written, student directed piece called ‘Charlie.’ This play dealt with their scene changes in quite a theatrical way - the play has a guardian angel as a main character so a group of male angels (complete with wings) made all the changes. Ordinarily I think the scene changes would have really slowed the pace of the play but in this fashion they were engaging and entertaining. Well done.

On top of that, the group had a packed house. I hope they all had as good a time putting the show together as I did watching it!
