Went to see ‘Musical of Musicals last night. I give it a solid O-K. The show is a send up of musicals: they do the same story (the ole ‘you must pay the rent!’ I can’t pay the rent!’ chestnut) in varying musical styles - Sondheim, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Kander and Ebb, Andrew Llyod Webber and so on. If you’re in the know, it’s an enjoyable show. There were people around us though who could not figure out why we were laughing.
Musically I think it’s probably damn hard to write in a way that is close enough to someone elses style that you recoginze it, but far enough away that you’re not copying. I thought the music was pretty good; there’s a great song in the Sondheim section ala ‘Green Finch and Linnet bird’ where The Young Girl sings that she can’t hear another character because of a flock of birds constantly flying round her head.
All the sections were too long - once the joke is played it’s played and the dialogue wasn’t engaging enough to keep me involved. There was a Jerry Herman send up but it was only based on one musical (Hello Dolly) and it was a really thin joke.
The best section was the Andrew Lloyd Webber one because it was a direct send up of him, instead of a story in his style…..

There was a lot of spite in the section. Which I enjoyed thoroughly!
My favourite line was in the Rodgers and Hammerstein section, aptly titled “Corn!”
“What’s that in my tooth? It’s a kernel of truth.”
The worst part of the night were the mikes. They didn’t turn them off when actors weren’t on stage and you could hear them breathing, quite heavily, when they were off stage. Made for an interesting underscore….
